Well, it seems that quite a few people each week are stumbling accross this blog via a google search, trying to find some information about Brighton’s car boot sale a.k.a Sunday Market.  I think they find there way here due to my previous post ‘Brighton’s Sunday Market is Moving’.

That post contains no relevant information – so I thought I would do a new post which will actually tell you what you need and want to know!

Brighton Sunday Market 1 (2008)

A (VERY VERY) BRIEF HISTORY

The Sunday Market first started around 27 years ago and was always held at Brighton Train Station car park.  However, recently, the organisers were forced to move location because they were only getting to open once a month.  This was apparantly due to engineering works on the railway lines, but most of us suspect its more to do with the new hotel opposite not wanting to be woken up at 5am on a Sunday morning.

So the boot sale is now held at Brighton marina – on the top floor of the multistory car park.

OPENING TIMES:

It is open from about 7am until midday.  However, traders usually arrive very early and so keen buyers are there any time from about 6am.

COST:

I believe the cost is £12 per pitch for traders.  Buyers and browsers are free.

WHAT WILL I BE ABLE TO BUY?:

You can expect to find a whole host of brilliant things for sale – ranging from clothes, vintage items, bric a brac, house clearance items, books, records, furniture, fruit & veg…the list goes on.

I would say it is more of a professional traders market these days – much more of a market than a classic boot sale.  As such, prices are not really cheap – generally, traders are aware of what things are worth, so whilst not unheard of, its rare to get super cheap bargains.

There are always a number of private sellers doing the tadtional boot sale thing of selling all their old tat they no longer want, but the majority of stalls are traders who are there everyweek.

I would certainly recommend attending if you haven’t done so before.  The new location is a bit smaller than where it used to be held and a bit further out of the centre of Brighton – but it looks out over the sea and the marina – so the views are great!

WILL I MAKE FRIENDS?:

All sorts of people go to the market, which is one of its great appeals for me.  Its quite inclusive, always busy and has a great atmosphere about it.

It can take some time to get round the whole thing (if you want to properly rummage for hidden treasures) – so make sure you go early enough to get a few hours browsing time.

Of course – Brighton is not the only car boot sale in the local area – there are plenty of others to choose from.

OTHER BOOT SALE OPTIONS – OUT OF TOWN SALES:

Perhaps my favourate of all the local sales is run by Mega Car Boot Sales – visit their website here at http://www.megacarbootsale.co.uk/.

They run one every Sunday during the hotter months at either Poyningsor Sayers Common.  They are now shut for 2009 and will start again in 2010.

Their website contains the dates, times and maps on how to get there.

These sales are more in the country outside Brighton and as such you get the added delight of seeing some Sussex senery, with all it has to offer, including an impressive array of animal entrails!

The benefit of these sales is they are much more traditional – almost entirely private sellers and real bargains to be had.  Most things seems to be 50p – £5, haggling is mroe than accepted and you can come away with bag fulls of joyous bargains.

WHAT IF I WANT A BURGER?:

Not a problem.

The food is perhaps a bit more questionable – not so much fruit and veg stalls or olive’s – but more greasy burgers and hot dogs.

This food van always makes me laugh whenever I go there.  Why one earth would anyone thing that having a 8ft tall hot dog man pouring sources over himself ready to be eaten would make anyone actually desire a hot dog is beyond me.  If I was a child I would be disturbed at the prospect that I was about to chomp down on a friendly hot dog man.

Giant Car Boots are what they say – giant.  I mean massive.  Big fields with rows upon rows of sellers.  They take a good 3 hours to properly look round – but its more than worth investing the time as you can get virtually anything and at prices you would never get offered in brighton.

Today I am officially introducing a new regular feature of ourworldmyeye – a regular and fascinating fact!

I also intend to do some amazing drawings to illustrate these facts.  And when I say amazing – I MEAN amazing!

After being a techno-jinx at the end of April, I have finally got things back into a manageable state.

BACK FROM THE DEAD

Well, what a time of it.

The computer issue was long running and provided long headaches, but it is finally standing proud once more and everything is rescued and back where it needs to be. Below, I will give some more details about the computer problems and how I resolved them, in case it ever proves useful for anyone else who experiences the same and is searching the internet for assistance.

Its strange how used to objects you can get – particularly how dependent on a piece of technology. When it is removed from your everyday life, you suddenly realise the impact it has. My camera’s and my computer are two of my most essential possessions, in terms of achieving my creative goals. To loose both for a month was difficult at best.

The computer, perhaps less so. That mainly just annoyed me. I was annoyed (once again) that computers are shiter than they should be and far from robust. I was also annoyed at the sheer amount of time I wasted to get it back up and running, when seemingly it is meant to be a time saving device!

I have a love hate relationship with computers though. I love what they can achieve and the fact they have democratised many things that ordinary folks like myself would not be able to do otherwise. I hate the fact they have developed and progressed at an alarming rate and reached a position where I feel they are being asked to do things that they are not really 100% capable of doing! Computers go wrong more than they should and that can only be down to bad design, bad usage and bad expectations.

Things I hated about not having a computer for a month:

1) Not being able to process any digital images

2) No internet and therefore no blog or email

3) No being able to watch Sci-Fi series from the comfort of my bed

4) No access to years worth of documents, images, emails and bookmarks

5) Fear that I would loose all my data

Things I loved about not having a computer for a month:

1) Being free from the shackles of social network sites

2) Not being a slave to a screen

3) Realising computers are not ‘The Shit’ but are actually ‘A bit shit’

4) Peace, freedom and liberation!!!

5) Not being addicted to checking the headlines on BBC News

So that’s that, my comprehensive study on computer use!!!

The Camera was less of a mixed bag; perhaps we need another list to illustrate the point? Another list everyone?

Anyway, let’s put all this behind us now and get normal service to resume. My digital camera is still out of operation due to no lens, but I shall press on with blogging the blog as much as possible in other ways. I have now sourced a new camera and just need to raise the cash to purchase it.

For those who might be interested, I will give an account of what occurred to my iMac and how I sorted it out below. There is some more info at this post.

THE SPEC

This might not be 100% accurate as whilst I am fairly good with computers, I have no interest in makes, model numbers or other computer related figures. But I have an iMac 2.16 GHz with 1mb Ram. It is an Intel core duo or whatever the term is, I think the late 2006 model. 17” screen.

THE PROBLEM

The computer was working fine, just getting a bit sluggish over the period of a few months. I tried downloading a few things to speed it up and ultimately decided I needed to invest in some new RAM. Then, one evening as I tried to open Photoshop, the spinning wheel of doom cropped up and the Mac froze.

I turned it off by holding the power button down and then restarted it. The computer never restarted properly – it just hung on a grey screen with a spinning wheel. Nothing I could do would get it to get past this stage.

ATTEMPT TO RESOLVE

I did some internet research as know my way around the back end of a PC but not an apple machine. Found various bits of advice, most of which are included on this great little guide I found – TECH TIP: MY MAC WON’T START! A TINY GUIDE

Check it out as it’s a good place to start.

All I could get to work was booting from the OSX instillation disc. Once this was running on the machine, I ran the disc utility programme on my hard disc which in some cases can repair minor issues with a hard disc (either by choosing to repair the disc errors or disc permissions).

Disc Utility failed – stating that my hard drive had an invalid node structure and could not be repaired. It also sometimes said there was an error in the catalogue structure of the b-tree (or something like that).

I panicked!

I then calmed down and did more internet research. This seemed to point to getting some software called Disc Warrior which can do some rather magic things to damaged discs. You can buy direct from them or from most apple stores – however they tend to be expensive. I ended up getting it from Amazon as it cost me less.

Discwarrior is easy to use – you just boot up from the disc (be patient as this can take over 5 minutes as it runs from a basic version of the operating system which is stored on the disc). Discwarrior then allows you to check any disc…which, for a decent sized internal hard drive can take quite a few hours.

The theory of the software is that it will repair all the data errors on the disc, the permissions, the structure of the data and any problems there in. Then it creates a new disc image which you can replace the damaged one with. I.E it will simply replace all the data on your hard disc with a nice working version of the same data.

Discwarrior did its stuff and eventually told me that it had repaired the disc, but could not replace my current one due to a serious malfunction on the disc.

SAVING MY DATA

So I knew that Discwarrior had saved my data, it just could not replace it on my existing hard drive. The software has a preview function that allows you to view the new disc it creates before replacing your old one (to check all the data is there etc). The great thing about this is that you can also copy the new repaired data to an external drive or another internal drive that’s working.

I attempted to do this on my Lacie external hard drive, which I use for backing up. However, it didn’t work. I asked Alsoft (the makers of Discwarrior why) and they said the disc must be formatted to work with Apple machines – I.E it must be Mac OS Journal formatted and not FAT32 (as my disc was). I couldn’t wipe my external drive and re-format it as it had my only back up on it.

Luckily, a few phone calls later and my friend agreed to lend me his external drive, which was empty and formatted in the right way. The extra benefit of that was it was firewire so it would transfer the data much quicker (USB drives do work with Discwarrior, it just takes longer). I plugged his drive in and Discwarrior recognised it and allowed me to back up all my important data. I was also careful to copy over ALL the LIBRARY folders as there contain most of the programme specific data you need (to recover emails, bookmarks, Lightroom database information etc). There are numerous Library folders, so make sure you get them all!

MOVING ON

So I now had the back up of everything I needed so booted the computer from the OSX instillation disc again and re-formatted my internal drive, zeroing all the data. After doing this, I re-installed the operating system on the drive and the computer booted up fine. However, I then restarted it as a final test and the computer froze again during loading – proof if proof be need be the drive was beyond repair.

So I bit the bullet and bought a new hard drive – opted for a Western Digital 500GB drive – which is nice! If your need to know, you need to get a SATA 3.5” disc for the type of iMac I have (can be SATA or SATAII)

Replacing the hard drive yourself is not easy. I have built PC’s before, but never tinkered inside a Mac. Versions before my one (late 2006) are considerably easier, but it seems Apple are keen for users to not update their own machines (apart from the RAM). But – speak to an Apple shop or Apple technician and they want to charge an obscene amount for the procedure. I decided to go ahead and do it myself due to being poor!

Again I did a large amount of internet research to find the best way forward – after reading and watching many guides, I stumbled across the official Apple Service Manual – which was invaluable. I printed the sections that concerned me and used it as my guide. It took a good hour and involved cutting through special electric shielding, suspending screens and generally panic – but managed to get the drive changed and working. FINISHING UP

With the new drive installed and the computer seeming to work, I re-installed the OS and then all my software. Then I dragged all the stuff I backed up from the external drive to my internal and put it back where it should be. I managed to get my emails back into Entourage and my bookmarks into Firefox and my Lightroom databases in place. To do this I basically installed the software and then copied the data folder for each. A quick search on Google should point you in the direction of which files to move over for your applications.

Then…job done – the computer was back to how it was before the drive when tits.

Hope that helps someone, at some point, who experiences what I did and is spending hours on the internet looking for advice!

Just Before the Lens Breaks (2009)

NIKON D80 LENSES ARE NOT SHATTER RESISTANT!

So…how much bad techno-luck can you have in a day?

In my case, quite a bit!  There is good reason for my lack of posts this week (apart from one I had already half finished, so finished up at work).

The tale begins last Friday – it was a glorious day.  The day before Hannah’s birthday.  I had the afternoon off and the sun was blazing.  So, we went to Stamner Park – our mission being three fold;
1) Have fun in the park
2) Go tot he nursery there to buy some plants
3) Have a walk and take in the glory of Spring

All was going well…very well…too well.  Took a few shots in and around the nursery and was thinking of doing a post about it on my return home.  Then went for a cup of tea and cake in the local tea rooms – again, thought I might mention it in the blog.  Post tea, we set off and after what can only be described as a camera bag malfunction, my digital SLR went flying through the air (in slow motion of course) and struck the pavement below.

Nope – it really is broken

If this had been a film, I would have dived to try and catch it (also in slow motion) – but it wasn’t and I didn’t.  I think my exact reaction was to stop still for a second and then pick up the pieces of the lens and put them in the camera bag without looking.  Fuck it, I thought, wait till you get home.

So – I managed to continue the walk in the park, trying my best to keep my mind off the impending doom that would face me when I got home and opened my bag.

Sure enough, on closer inspection…the lens is buggered.  Royally buggered at that…in pieces buggered.  The sort of buggered that gives you a sense of relief at the fact there is no chance of it being repaired – so at least you know where you stand!

So…now I have a £700 piece of kit that is absolutely useless until I find £300 for a new lens.  On my salary – that’s about a year away!!! One useless camera….OR IS IT?  See my next post for perhaps an exciting revelation!

I was going to bang on about how one of my favourite things about the summer is clear blue skies criss crossed with aeroplane trails and the sound of light aircraft gently humming in the background – but that seems pointless now!

WHEN A MAC WONT START – PANIC

As if ruining my digi was not enough, there was also the matter of my imac.  Now Mr Mac had been doing me proud for the past few years.  It is only about 3 years old and prior to this machine, I had always used PC’s.  The conversion to Apple was a tough road, but I had gotten through it and was enjoying the results.

Friday evening, Mac went super slow…almost to a dead still.  So I did what all good computer owners do – I turned it off and on again.  However, in this case – it didn’t have any of it.  Now Mac decided to freeze on a grey screen during loading and show the spinning wheel of doom.  “Can this get worse” said I “yes” the Techno-Gods replied.

After many attempts at restarting…I knew investigation was needed.  Never having had problems with the Mac before, I was stuck however as don’t know how to get behind the scenes with them.  So after a good hour of searching blogs and forums, I had some things to try and some possible solutions…I sighed a sigh of relief – thinking after the camera incident, I deserved a break!

You know what gets my back up?

I was wrong!  My investigations showed there was a problem with the hard disc, which is stopping the computer booting up…or me accessing ALL my data. I checked when I last did a back up – it was a year ago! Basically leaving me in the position of loosing all my work for over a year, including thousands of digital images – unless I can sort the problem.

At the bottom of this post is a bit of dull technical detail of what happened and how I will attempt to fix the problem – so you may want to skip that bit! I am going to post it in case someone with a similar problem finds this post looking for some help!

So – that explains my lack of blogging and general internet time! I am hurriedly penning this entry at work during my break.

Tomorrow is the big day when my last ditch effort to save my hard drive will commence – I will let you know the outcome!

INVALID NODE STRUCTURE

So – the technical bit about the Mac. The computer in question is a 17” iMac, 2 GHz, 1mb RAM – Intel duo processor. The problem started with the computer starting to run a bit sluggish. Taking a long while to load things and shut down etc. I guess this problem built over the course of a couple of weeks.
The day it went wrong, I went to open a program and it froze – so I did a hard re-boot to try and kick it into life. However, it never re-loaded, just stopped at the grey screen with the apple logo and a spinning wheel.

I did a bit of internet research and did the usual tricks – starting it in safe mode, resetting PRAM, running fsck etc etc. Do a quick google search and you will get many links to many documents about these processes. Nothing worked, so I booted the computer from the OS X instillation disc and then ran Disc Utility on the hard drive.

Disc Utility looks for errors and tries to fix them. In my case, it stated there was an Invalid Node Structure which could not be repaired. After more research, it seems that running Disc Warrior 4.1 on my machine is the best hope. You can buy a version that has a bootable CD, so the computer can be started by booting from the CD (holding C whilst turning the machine on) and then you can run the repair utility. I have ordered a copy of the programme and it should arrive tomorrow, so we will see then if it works or not! Apparently Node Failures are often not the hard disc going wrong in a hardware sense, but just some of the header in the catalog tree for the data has been written to the disc incorrectly. Disc Warrior can often (but not always) fix these issues.

If Disc Warrior does fail – then I guess I am screwed! I will put comments on this post with my progress tomorrow. Until then, fingers crossed!

Where the magic happened!

Finally – I’m online

Well, its finally happened.

Procrastination, laziness and ignorance has meant my web presence has been less than favourable for some time.

I have been meaning to get my website up and running for many months, but the fear of having to delve into the word of HTML, CSS and PHP was too much to bare.

So I decided on a two prong attack:

1. Get the blog part of my site up and running as a separate entity…namely www.ourworldmyeye.com
2. Once that was up and running, start trying to figure our how to build a website.

So, here we are!  One Easter bank holiday weekend later and its ready for use!  I would love to declare it was as easy as I hoped…but as with all web stuff…most of the guides and information about how to do stuff is written with the understanding you have some form of prior understanding!  My understanding is limited to stealing code from where I can and seeing if I can figure out how it works!

Still – armed with my trusty Mac, a couple of ‘For Dummies’ books, plenty of coffee, Haribo and chocolate and I’m up and running.

Should also give a mention to the author of this Word press theme – Max Is Now.  The theme I used as a template is called ‘Threat To Creativity’.  After much searching, I really liked his theme as it was a bit more interesting than some of the standard layouts and kinda sat with my aesthetics better.

POLAROID

After completing the Word press Easter Mission – thought it would be appropriate to illustrate the launch with a photo of my (less than adequate) workspace.  So cracked out the Polaroid back for my Mamiya, which hasn’t seen the light of day for some time.

Love the look of Polaroids – they always have a 70’s feel about them!  I also love the ghost image you get when you peel the back off…often more interesting than the actual photograph.  Look!…
