Please do get all visual anthropology wank on it! Sounds interesting!!!

Semiotics are of course always loaded with whatever the significance of various things are at the time - as you say the history of anything is hugely relevant to how we view it at this point in time.

I am also really interested in how this represents itself in different things - language, visuals etc. As you say, the term Gay has meant everything from happiness, to a homosexual and now to a general everyday insult or word of condemnation.

Likewise, the same is true of visual entities. 50 years ago, to see a photograph of a computer would suggest to the view - modernity, progress, technological advance and perhaps an excitement of what the future holds. Today, it might suggest work, mundanity, social networking etc etc. In not a huge amount of time, the visual signifiers have shifted massively.

I guess fashion is another huge example.

I am thinking on about this generally and how it could be made into a larger project - I shall keep you informed!

(It is a church door yes - too easy perhaps!!!)

Bloody interesting question... I could get all 'visual anthropology wank' on this, but I don't see you would thank me for it.

The problem with semiotics id that it is all subjective in relation to time, history and who you bloody are.

Take language and the shifting notions of what it means to say that you are 'gay'. So any deconstruction of signifies is only specifically relevant to that point and time.

So... how abstract an image can you create and still pass on the message.
