MOUSE ART – THE BEAUTIFUL WORLD OF CHANCE AND ORDER

WHAT IS MOUSE ART AND HOW DO I MAKE IT?

A while ago now, a friend of ours – Mr Phillip Wellington of I Love New Work (fine designer & soon to be re-brander of OurWorldMyEye and my other website) had an interesting image on his desktop.

Curious as to how it was created, I asked him and was amazed by the reply!

In his Internet travels as a Graf Des he stumbled upon a little app called IOGraph. It is dead simple – you download it, install it, click for it to start and then forget about it!  The software then tracks your mouse movements until you tell it to stop.  The result – MOUSE ART!

Some months after first seeing it, it was recalled from my dusty memory banks and I set about locating it. You can find the app for free here on the website www.iographica.com It was created by Moscow designer Anatoly Zenkov to brighten up routine work after posting it on Flikr it caused informal interest and afterward Anatoly Zenkov and his colleague Andrey Shipilov decided to evolve the app.

As is customary for me – I have become rather obsessed with it, or was for a few weeks at least.  It was interesting seeing how different patterns where built up over different time periods as well as depending on what activity you where participating in on the computer.  After running it at various points and finding creations I liked, I did some minor tweaking in Photoshop to give them a splash of colour etc and now my favourite one sits proudly as my desktop wallpaper.

I love things like this, where complete chance creates something that has real visual appeal and the unknown order you create whilst in the chaos becomes a significant part of the creation.

A COUPLE OF IOGRAPHICA EXAMPLES

Below are two examples:

The first was done in a short space of time (4 minutes) whilst doing some serious Photoshop editing.

The second was done in just under 1 hour whilst doing a variety of Blog related admin tasks, Tweeting, Photoshop work and general Internet time wasting.
