MEET MY NEW FRIEND: HASSELBLAD 503 cxi FIELD TEST
OUT WITH THE OLD…IN WITH THE NEW
Fighting off the nostalgia and thoughts I was betraying old friends, I finally bit the bullet and sold my two medium format cameras in order to fund a new purchase – a mighty Blad!
I have been intending to do it for years in order to get something a bit more usable, portable and versatile. However, my old trusty Steed the Mamiya C3 was my first ever Medium Format (bought from none other than Heather Tait who recently shared her ‘Shot I Never Forgot’). The old twin lens beauty still frequented my eye and was a beautiful object – but unwieldy and prone to tantrums.
Then came my first love, the Mamiya RZ67 – a studio camera by rights, but the best Medium Format camera I could afford during my second year at University. It was big, bold and bulky, but held a dear place in my heart as it travelled the country with me, photographing landmarks for my major project.
So after deliberations and quiet chats, they conceded to being handed over to new eyes and they left my service with a heavy heart. BUT I then had funds to re-invest and along came a rather nice Hasselblad 503 cxi at a rather nice price and in an uncharacteristic decisive moment, I bid, I won and I rejoiced.
The camera arrived last Friday and was given its first test run at the weekend. It is a pleasurable thing, a pleasure to use and produces pleasant results. I thought I would share some of the first shots with you, so you can join in the celebrations.
Long live film, long live medium format and long live quality Swedish engineering!
