MURRAY BALLARD – THE SHOT I NEVER FORGOT

The latest in this series comes from Murray Ballard. I have been eagerly awaiting Murray’s image as the pedigree of his work is fabulous, his recent project ‘The Prospect of Immortality’ took 6 years to complete and has been met with great critical acclaim, with its inaugural exhibition being at the Impressions Gallery, Bradford.

Murray has deservedly been widely published and won numerous accolades notably the British Journal of Photography’s ‘Emerging Photographer of Note’ in 2011.  Hence I was curious to see what sort of image he would pick as an unforgotten shot and I hope you enjoy this glimpse into his personal practice.

Over to you Murray;

MURRAY BALLARD – THE SHOT I NEVER FORGOT

MURRAY BALLARD "SURFERS, PORTHMEOR BEACH, ST IVES, CORNWALL" (2007)

In October 2007 I was in St Ives for a week’s holiday with my then girlfriend.  I had graduated from the Photography course at Brighton University that summer and I hadn’t really picked up a camera since.  After three intense years of nothing but photography, I probably needed a bit of a break, but by October I was keen to get out and take some pictures.  Much to my girlfriend’s disappointment I brought my large-format 5×4 camera on holiday with me.

One afternoon, halfway through the week, I ventured out alone with my camera.  The light was absolutely beautiful – bright and perfectly overcast – a large-format photographer’s dream.  It might sound silly to some people, but I remember finding it really difficult to know what to photograph.  I had become so used to working on projects with specific ideas throughout University, that I felt a bit lost just wandering around without any particular purpose.

It took me a while, but slowly, over the course of the afternoon, I re-discovered the joy of taking photographs just for the fun of it.
