RICHARD ROWLAND – THE SHOT I NEVER FORGOT

Richard Rowland’s work tends to focus on the Urban Environment and his recent projects have provided some fascinating glimpses into the sometimes surreal cultures of cities world-wide.  The Urban Fictions series is a  great, rye look at idealised architecture in China and the recent street portrait series in Mumbai and Dubai are rather wonderful.  The image Richard has chosen for The Shot I Never Forgot crosses between the surreal and street portraiture elements to his work in quite a unique way!

RICHARD ROWLAND – ‘WELDER’ (THE SHOT I NEVER FORGOT)

I was working in Shanghai on ‘Urban Fictions’, a photo & video project looking at the emergence of European-style theme towns in Eastern China.
These are massive scale developments for China’s ever-expanding business elite. One day I came across a welder on-site and was dumbfounded that
he’d be doing this highly-skilled and dangerous job wearing a cardboard mask. There was something preposterous about these enormous developments,
essentially designed to showcase China as the powerhouse of the 21st century, built on the backs of migrant workers with such makeshift protective gear.
Sad, slightly amusing, but true.

The Shot I Never Forgot  is an on-going series of posts where I invite Photographers to share an image that has always remained with them, despite being unused.

The premise is that most photographers shoot many more images than ever see the light of day and often take some fabulous standalone images on instinct whilst making a particular body of work or project.  Because these single images do not fit the theme, they sit gathering dust in the archive.

However, there are usually a few of these images which stay in our minds as they have special significance or are too good to be lying dormant.

The Shot I Never Forgot is an invitation to share these images with the world and let them stand alone in their own right for others to enjoy.
